Back-to-school events, giveaways happening in BR area

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - With the start of a new school year right around the corner, parents and students will have a chance to attend several back-to-school events and giveaways happening in the Baton Rouge area.

• On Saturday, August 6 at 9 a.m., Charity Christian Center will be giving away free school shoes, free school uniforms, and free school supplies/backpacks at 871 O’Neal Lane. Elementary, middle, and high school students are welcome. Organizers say there will also be face painting, games, toys and food. A child must be present to participate in the giveaway. 400 pairs of shoes available.

• On Saturday, August 6, there will be a back-to-school and children’s clothes drive-thru giveaway from 9 a.m. until noon at Greater Mount Carmel Baptist Church of Scotlandville.

• On Saturday, August 6 beginning at 10 a.m., there will be a back-to-school supply giveaway at the Zachary High School Gymnasium front parking lot located at 4100 Bronco Lane in Zachary. Organizers say elementary, middle, high school and college students are welcome. An adult must accompany all Kindergarten students.

• On Saturday, August 6 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. at 7361 Airline Hwy, The Salvation Army will be giving away a backpack full of supplies to the first 500 children. For the give-away, parents must bring a valid ID, the child must be present and in age range from 5 yrs. to 12 yrs. old. They will also have local vendors providing health information, games, toys for the children and good food.

• On Saturday, August 6 the Ascension 4 Youth Fest will take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 1201 Maginnis Street in Donaldsonville, La. Organizers say there will be free food, backpacks, school supplies, school uniforms, entertainment, hair cuts, immunizations, sports physicals and much more at the event.

• On Saturday, August 6 from 10 a.m. until noon, Love Fellowship Ministry, which is located at 2642 North Street in Baton Rouge, will host a school supplies giveaway event.
• On Saturday, August 6 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., The East Baton Rouge Parish School System will host a Back to School Bash at the Raising Cane’s River Center. The event is free and open to the public and will feature a giveaway of backpacks filled with school supplies that are divided into two categories, grades K-5 and grades 6-12. Additionally there will be $100 gift card giveaways to three lucky families.

• On Saturday, August 6 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., the District 5 Back 2 School bookbag, school supply and uniform giveaway will take place at BREC’s North Sherwood Forest Community Park located at 3140 N Sherwood Forest Blvd. Organizers say there will also be chances to go fishing, snowballs, basketball and inflatables.

• On Sunday, August 7 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m., there will be a giveaway at Advantage Charter Academy located at 14740 Plank Road. Organizers say there will be free back packs, free school supplies, free food, giveaways and more.

• On Sunday, August 7 from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. at 3535 Riley Street, Metro Council District 5 is inviting the community to come out and enjoy free hair cuts for back-to-school, along with a bookbag and uniform giveaway.

• On Monday, August 8 at the White Castle Community Center located on 32725 Bowie Street, there will be an annual school supply giveaway from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. If you would like to patriciate please contact the Town Hall at 225-545-3012
