No. 5 Tennessee sweeps No. 12 LSU
BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - No. 12 LSU was swept by No. 5 Tennessee at Tiger Park in the Tigers’ second SEC series of the weekend.
LSU (23-5, 2-4 SEC) fell to the Lady Vols (24-1, 6-0 SEC), 5-0 in Game 1, 3-0 in Game 2, and 9-2 in Game 3.
The Tigers were just 6-for-70 at the plate for the weekend.
“It wasn’t our weekend,” said head coach Beth Torina. “We didn’t match up well against them. I don’t know who would match up well against them. Their pitching staff is pretty incredible. They’re going to be tough to beat and it wasn’t our weekend to do it.”
GAME 1: Tennessee - 5, LSU - 0
Tennessee got on the board in the top of the third inning when Katie Taylor blasted a two-run homer to give the Lady Vols a 2-0 lead. Tennessee picked up two more runs on a wild pitch and an error by the Tigers to take a 4-0 lead.
The Lady Vols added one more run on a single in the top of the seventh to make it 5-0.
Ali Kilponen (8-1) got the start in the circle for the Tigers and took her first loss of the season. She pitched all seven innings, allowing five runs on six hits while walking seven and striking out seven.
GAME 2: Tennessee - 3, LSU - 0
Sydney Berzon (7-2) took the loss in the circle. She gave up three runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking two.
LSU had just one hit. Ciara Briggs singled in the fourth inning.
GAME 3: Tennessee - 9, LSU - 2
Ali Kilponen (8-2) suffered her second loss of the weekend. She allowed four runs on five hits in 5.0 innings. She struck out four and walked four.
McKaela Walker was 1-for-3, Danieca Coffey was 1-for-4, and Savannah Stewart was 1-for-2 at the plate for the Tigers.
